Karen is a is a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist and a certified specialist in Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM). She is the lead clinician for the recurrent pregnancy loss clinic in the hospital. Her clinical areas of interest include early pregnancy loss, multiple pregnancy and high risk obstetrics.

As a MFM specialist she offers prenatal screening for chromosomal abnormality, prenatal diagnostic techniques including amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling (CVS) and non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT). She performs advanced prenatal ultrasound including fetal echocardiography. She also runs a general gynaecology service.

Karen is the lead obstetrician in the recurrent pregnancy loss clinic in the Rotunda. This service provides couples with thorough investigation related to their pregnancy loss, in addition to dedicated early pregnancy support with frequent ultrasound monitoring and counselling.

Dr Karen Flood graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2001. Karen has pursued higher specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology at the three Dublin Maternity Hospitals, Cork University Maternity Hospital and the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital. She worked as Assistant Master at the Rotunda in 2013 following completion of a maternal fetal medicine fellowship programme in the Rotunda Hospital and in Columbia University Medical Center, New York. She completed her doctorate thesis on platelet function in pregnancy loss.
As the recipient of several research awards, Karen has published and presented internationally on platelet function in pregnancy, prenatal diagnosis and screening. She is involved in ongoing research in the area of perinatal genetics and recurrent pregnancy loss.

As senior lecturer with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, she is involved in research and medical education at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
