Dr Pennycooke is a certified specialist in Interventional Radiology and Muskuloskeletal Radiology with a special interest in male and female fertility assessments and procedures. His clinical work in the Rotunda focuses on adult ultrasound investigations and procedures, primarily in fertility and gynaecological conditions. In Connolly Hospital, he performs cross-sectional imaging and interventional radiology procedures covering a range of medical and surgical specialties.

A graduate of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, he completed two years basic general surgical training before completing his higher specialist training in Radiology at Beaumont Hospital. He subsequently travelled to Canada to undertake three international fellowships in Interventional Radiology, Musculoskeletal Radiology and Neuroradiology at Vancouver General Hospital. He spent two further years as a Consultant in British Columbia, establishing new services in Kelowna General Hospital including the introduction of Dual-Energy CT MSK imaging, establishment of a Stroke Service and radioembolization of hepatic tumours as well as expansion of hepatic, renal and bone tumour ablation procedures. He returned to Ireland to take up a Consultant appointment between Connolly Hospital and the Rotunda in 2019.

Dr. Pennycooke has a keen interest in medical education and has held appointments as Radiology Lecturer for Royal College of Surgeons Ireland as well as Tutor Registrar in the Department of General Surgery at Connolly Hospital. He has received awards recognising his achievements in the area including a Certificate of Merit from Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology Society of Europe (CIRSE).
