Dr Holohan has a special interest in the impact of epilepsy on pregnancy, the management of post-dates pregnancy, the aetiology and management of female urinary incontinence and domestic violence issues in obstetrics and gynaecology.
She was director of the Sexual Assault Treatment Unit from 1998 to 2007 and has been proactive in the development of a national forensic medical examination service for victims of sexual crime.

Dr Holohan is RCPI Dean of Professional Competence and Chair of Professional Competence Sub-Committee of the Forum of Irish Postgraduate Training Bodies.

Dr Mary Holohan qualified from medical school in Cork. She trained in obstetrics and gynaecology, achieving specialist certification in both Ireland and UK. Appointed consultant in 1995, she was the first female obstetrician on the Rotunda Hospital staff.
